Trust me when I say I know where to eat in Wellington. I lived down here for a year for my first year of uni, and since have been back a couple times a year (to see my sister and also because of the food). While all of my reviews seem to be very generous and kind, after many many foodie trips I have now refined the foodie places I visit down to only the very best!
The Welly food scene has always been amazing, cafe culture is very much a thing and cocktails are a form of art. In saying, like anywhere you need to know where to go!!! There are plenty of reasonably priced places that are amazing but you wouldn’t give a second look unless you knew the inside scoop.
Cafes/ Snacks
PREFAB
The greatest of all cafes. The owner is the maitre d every day, this place is an institution and run like a well oiled machine. Coffee is divine, food is of such a high quality and it is always packed to the brim; a sure sign of a good cafe!!
I got the avocado on rye special - delicious flavours, one of the best cafe avos on toast I’ve had!!
Open Mon-Fri only
SIXES AND SEVENS
Sixes and Sevens has a cult like following in Wellington, their baked goods are genuinely some of the best, and they also do great coffee. I’ve had their caramel slice in the past and it was absolutely delicious, honestly if you are a sweet tooth like me you will be in absolute heaven!!
I got the cinnamon scroll - loads of cinnamon, crispy on the outside and soft in the middle and delish citrusy icing mmmm
Open Mon - Sat, and then at the Harbourside Markets on Sun morning
FIX AND FOGG
Fix and Fogg produce the greatest range of nut butters on the market. At home I devour their everything butter and choc almond butter like there is no tomorrow. They have a pop up toast/porridge bar that provides the perfect opportunity to try some new flavours, you can also buy their nut butters here!
I got the fruit toast PB on toast, it was seriously yum and I think I may have found a new favourite. For $5 it’s the perfect breakie when the rest of your foodie destinations in Welly are on the steeper side
Open Mon - Sat
MARANUI CAFE
If it's good enough for the (ex?) royals it's good enough for me! Very very cool views and vibe to this place, the staff are lovely and although there is always a wait for a table it is well worth it! They also have a super big menu, and loads of sides, there is definitely something for everyone! They are also infamous for their milkshakes!!!
I got the avocado on toast, and added halloumi! This was super yum, although not quite as good as Prefab I will say! Also ordered the peanut butter hot chocolate, because when in Welly! This was super yum and creamy and nice to have something a little unique.
Open Mon - Sun
Others cafes that I love; Two Grey and Neo
Dinner
DRAGONFLY
Cannot rate this place more. The food was fresh and the menu allowed so many options, small and large, healthy and not so healthy. The ambience of the place is also super cool, if you’re able to make sure you request a table in their courtyard for the full experience!
I got the chicken lemongrass salad and it was absolutely amazing. The combination of sweet, salty, crisp and tender made the meal a pleasure for the senses
Open Mon - Sat
THE CHIPPERY
You can’t go past fish and chips for a Sunday night feed, and the chippery provides the high quality goods! Close to the boathouses so you can enjoy a bit of a sunset picnic. The food is a little more expensive than your average, but trust me when I say it’s worth it!!
We got the gurnard beer battered, curly fries and agria chips. All were beyond yum, but I have to say that the curly fries were the best I’ve ever had, highly highly recommend!
Open Mon - Sun
Others dinner places that I love; The Old Quarter, 1154 and Mr Go’s
Cocktails
DIRTY LITTLE SECRET
Rooftop bars are where it’s at, and Dirty Little Secret provides a very cool place to spend the late afternoon. They have all the standard drinks and a few cocktails on offer too!
I got the pear cocktail and it was super yum, a little different to what I would usually order but very nice! Also got the chips, which were very very chunky; if you’re a thick cut kinda chip person definitely order!!
Open Tues - Sun
DRAGONFLY
Dragonfly have like three pages of cocktails, all are insane sounding and you’ll seriously wish you could order 8 without blowing all of your savings. They also offer a cocktail tasting board, which if you’re indecisive like me is the perfect way to try the 2 most popular cocktails and the special cocktail without breaking the bank.
I got the tasting board made up of the ginger kiss (best cocktail I’ve ever had, super smooth and tasted like gingerbread cookies), China girl (fruity and sweet and very yum) and an aloe Vera tequila cocktail (did not rate, thanks cousin Becky for forever tying tequila for me)
Open Mon - Sat
Other great spots for a drink or two; Chow, The Library, St Johns
Until the next foodie adventure,
