Takeaway Spots in Auckland

On a sunny evening there is nothing better than ordering something to eat, grabbing a few blankets and heading to a cool spot to watch the sun go down.

Here are some of the takeaway places I've been to recently, some are definitely better than others!!!

My favourite takeaway meal in recent months is without a doubt the Fish Smith Calamari Burger.

I also highly rate the Daisy Chang pork and prawn noodles, Mexico fried chicken and Burger Burger chicken burger.

OUT EAST

Hallertau Clevedon

Eat at the Maraetai Hill

Relatively new to the scene Hallertau does the simple stuff right.

We got a few burgers and potatoes and jalapeno poppers and all were good quality yum food. Definitely not mouth watering or particularly out of this world good but worth a try, and above your average pub food.

The buns on the burgers and the beef/chicken in them was the particular highlight. Pretty good bang for your buck too; $15 burgers aren't half bad!

Daisy Changs Howick

Eat at Stockade Hill

Dining in at Daisy Chang can be hit or miss. I once had a squid salad that was potentially the worst thing I've ever eaten. But I've also had the duck hawker roll that exceeded expectations. In terms of noodles they absolutely nail it! We got the drunken noodles (beef) and the pork and prawn noodles as well as some broccoli

Everything was absolutely delish. The beef noodles were tender and quite spicy, while the pork and prawn noodles were full of flavour and nice and sweet. The broccoli was also good, nice and tender but potentially not worth the price tag.

Noodles were around $18, so pretty standard pricing. Pretty decent portions too, probably 2 boxes of noodles would feed three for dinner.

Portofino Howick

Enjoy at Howick Beach

Honestly, this is biased because there is nothing I feel like more when I'm hungover than pasta. Portofino Howick does pasta well for takeaway but probably not the place to dine in, or order a hefty meal. We got the lasagna, carbonara and garlic bread.

Both the pastas were yum and satisfied by carb cravings. Was surprised that the lasagna was actually my favourite. Perfect mix of mince, cheese/cream and tomato which is very hard to come by! The carbonara was also good but potentially too eggy for my liking. The garlic bread was super average, wayyyyy too garlicky and the bread wasn't crispy at all. The pastas were around the $18 mark but are huge portions; the carbonara could easily feed two!

Bird on a Wire Orakei

Eat at Mission Bay Beach

If you need a little bit of balance, and protein in your life then Bird on a Wire is worth a visit. I definitely believe that the Ponsonby one is far far better than Orakei, but Orakei is definitely a more convenient location! I got the regular sized salad (2 types) and chicken.

The chicken was super good and tender, and I'm always very fussy about meat! The salads were also good and full of fresh veges, but definitely were lacking in the sauce department. I have had the pesto chicken bowl from here before and I definitely was a bigger fan of that to be honest. The salad was around the $16 mark; so more on the expensive side considering places like Tank do a very decent huge salad for $14.

A LITTLE FURTHER

FishSmith Ponsonby

Devour at Sentinel Beach Reserve

Been wanting to try FishSmith for yonks and finally got round to it, and it did not disappoint. Super fresh, crunchy and flavoursome food! We got the calamari burger and fish tacos. Both were full of lots of different elements that complemented each other perfectly and went down a treat.

The standout though was for sure the calamari burger, highly recommend! Quite a bit more expensive than your average fish n chip shop, but the quality is definitely superior!

Mexico Takapuna

Grab to go and eat at Takapuna Beach

A go to for tasty Mexican food! The fried chicken is always a go to, and they have a pretty big takeaway menu available too. Heaps of vege options available as well which is always good. We got the chicken taco, prawn taco, chicken quesadilla, fried chicken and side salad.

The fried chicken was for sure the highlight. Definitely a must order and the sauce is super good too! I personally prefer the tacos over the quesadillas but think it may just be personal preference. I also rated the side salad; super fresh with feta, seeds and really yum dressing! A little on the expensive side, depending on what you get but between a group of us we ended up paying around $17 each!

Burger Burger Newmarket

Eat at the Auckland Domain

An Auckland icon, Burger Burger is consistently good, quick and pretty affordable.

We got the kids meal (fish bunnuce, chips and lemonade) and the chicken burger. Definitely recommend ordering a kids meal if you feel like a few fries with a burger/bunnuce that won't make you stuffed to the brim.

Honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of the fish, it didn't taste super fresh and probably wouldn't order fish from here again. However, the chicken burger is bloody amazing and I will continue to rave about it - definitely a must try.

Burgers are around the $15 mark and so are the kids meals!!!

Let me know if you have any recommendations for go to takeaway spots! Always on the hunt for new yummy places to try, especially as we head into summer and the thought of having dinner on the beach isn't quite so chilly!
