It's the time of year where catch ups with friends and family are becoming more and more frequent! I've compiled a list of places you can get a decent lunch or dinner for $20 or less. Here's some foodie spots to make the most of the silly season!

OUT EAST

Left to right; Daisy Changs drunken noodles, Melba chicken salad, Mexico fried chicken

Daisy Changs - Howick

Simple but good Asian food, cool decor and very chilled vibes.

Get the drunken noodles ($20) or the duck hawker roll ($16)

Mexico - Sylvia Park, Ellerslie, Britomart

They do some things super well, really good vibes and a great spot for a drink too!

Get the fried chicken ($16) or a couple of tacos ($8 each), my faves are the fish and avocado

FishBoy - Mission Bay

From the same people as FishBoy. Absolutely divine fish n chips! Limited inside seating, but the beach is just across the road.

Get the salt and pepper squid ($12) or the daily fish and chips ($15)

Melba - Manukau

Great service, lovely meals and such a huge range of options. Perfect place to go if you are picking up or dropping off to the Airport.

Get the woodfired pizza for dinner ($19-$24) or the honey garlic chicken salad for lunch ($22)

MORE CENTRAL

Left to right; Bird on a Wire pesto chicken bowl, Burger Burger chicken burger, Bedford Soda and Liquor mac n cheese

Bird on a Wire - Ponsonby Central, Commercial Bay, Orakei

Nutritious and lots of different flavours. Good place to have convo and decent catch up.

Get the pesto chicken bird bowl ($16)

Burger Burger - Ponsonby Central, Newmarket, Commercial Bay

An Auckland icon, cosy restaurants, burgers and fries done good.

Get the chicken bunnuce/burger ($15.20) and share some potato skins ($8)

Bedford Soda and Liquor - Ponsonby Central

The drinks are on the expensive side but their food is really reasonable and made up with lots of sides, perfect for sharing!

Get the mac n cheese ($14) and share a caesar salad ($9)

Federal Street Deli - Auckland Central

If you haven't been here go ASAP. Absolutely delish food and very quirky diner interior. Super good service too!

Get the street dog ($12), chicken salad sandwich ($16.50) and share some poutine ($10)

XuXu Dumplings - Britomart

Super cosy interior, delicious dumplings and a great place to spend an evening.

Get the chicken and mushroom dumplings ($12 for 6) and then share the chocolate steamed buns for dessert ($12), you'll thank me later.

KhuKhu Thai - Ponsonby

New to the scene, all vegan and delish!

Get the thai green curry ($19.90)

If you're feeling a little fussy or everyone feels like something different I would highly recommend Harbour Eats at Commercial Bay or Ponsonby Central! Lots of $20 and under options and a huge variety of food.

Places I haven't yet tried, but have heard great things about are Nonna in Newmarket and Good Dog Bad Dog in Commercial Bay.
